The John McKenzie Fellowship aims to support highly talented researchers with outstanding research capacity. It provides support to a Faculty of Science early career academic (level A or B) whose career has been severely interrupted, delayed or otherwise constrained. The fellowship is designed to enhance or re-establish their academic research career. Eligible interruptions may include significant COVID-19 related interruptions, chronic or serious illness (physical or mental), child rearing or primary responsibility for the sustained care of a dependent family member.
The fellowship is named after Professor John McKenzie, an internationally renowned geneticist with particular expertise in the population genetics of insecticide resistance. Professor McKenzie joined the University in 1977 and was awarded a personal chair in 1994. He became Dean of the Faculty of Science in 1998 after serving as Head of the Department of Genetics, and later held the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research). He retired in 2008.
