Information to note before completing the application

The Dyason Fellowships fund University staff to undertake or host a short-term international visit that fosters significant and lasting research collaborations with leading international university and non-university partners. Fellowships are awarded to foster collaborative projects across all disciplines that lead to joint research outputs. Interdisciplinary proposals are also strongly encouraged.

Before you Begin

  • Please ensure you have read and understood the Dyason Fellowships Funding Guidelines.
  • Applicants must hold an appointment at the University of Melbourne at Academic Level A (6) or higher with a minimum of 0.5 FTE for the duration of the award.  
  • Honorary and adjunct academic staff are not eligible to apply. 
  • Previous recipients of Dyason Fellowships may not reapply to the scheme for a period of two years after the round in which the initial fellowship was granted.
  • You must have the prior support of the Collaborator Institution you are partnering with. For the Dyason Fellowship, this should be in the form of a letter or email. As the purpose of the award is to foster international research collaborations, the letter should outline:
    • The support that will be offered,
    • How the requested travel will benefit the institutions,
    • How it might result in a significant and lasting research collaboration,
    • Any overlap in research areas, etc. 
  • Fully signed 'Authority to Submit form is required to collect HoD’s approval.
  • Incomplete applications or declined eligibility exemptions will not be progressed for further assessment.

    Research Project Activity Type

    Pure basic research is experimental and theoretical work undertaken to acquire new knowledge without looking for long term benefits other than the advancement of knowledge.

    Strategic basic research is experimental and theoretical work undertaken to acquire new knowledge directed into specified broad areas in the expectation of useful discoveries. It provides the broad base of knowledge necessary for the solution of recognised practical problems.

    Applied research is original work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge with a specific application in view. It is undertaken either to determine possible uses for the findings of basic research or to determine new ways of achieving some specific and predetermined objectives.

    Experimental research is developmental work, drawing on knowledge gained from research and practical experience and producing additional knowledge, which is directed to producing new products or processes or to improving existing products or processes.
